Not a lot is known about John Hummel, or the company called Kemp Manufacturing Corporation.   What I do know is that in March of 1962, a man by the name of John Hummel submitted a patent application for a spring and weedless hook design to be attached to a spoon.  Without getting into too much of the patent abstract jargon (most of which sounds foreign to me anyway), the lure is designed to be weedless until struck by a fish at which point to 2 trailing hooks would initiate and hook the fish.  If there was a problem releasing the hook harness, the hook assembly could be removed, and a replacement hook assembly could be easily placed back inside the lure.  John Hummel's whole approach to the design was to save fishermen the hassle of snagged lures and the amount of time it would take to free the hook from the fish's mouth before throwing the line in again...he was truly attempting to save aggravation everywhere with his design.  Unfortunately, I don't think his lure design was well received, and I can assume that it was not a hugely effective piece of fishing tackle.

The Kemac Kill'r Lure

The Kemac (For Kemp Manufacturing Co.).  A very sleek looking lure, but whether or not it catches fish is another story.

Early Version Patent Drawing From John Hummel

Original patent submission by the inventor John Hummel to the Patent Office.  Slightly different looking than the completed design, but more often than not, patent drawings can look quite different from the end result.
